I have been a practising glass artist for over 20 years. During this time I have strived to produce glass with a visual edge incorporating extensive kiln-forming, painting and sand-blasting. For several years I have been using these techniques to produce my Exotic Invader series for Seaview Gallery. I am currently working on larger-scale kiln formed works for the gallery and public commissions. (Seaview Gallery can assist in the commissioning of David's glass pieces).
The inspiration for my glasswork comes from the beauty and diversity of marine life. I have worked for over twenty years as a marine biologist whilst also developing skillls as a glass artist. The challenge in my work is to convey the beauty of the marine environment using the fascinating and challenging medium of glass.
My stained glass window panels are constructed with traditional lead techniques, however the designs are contemporary and techniques involved in preparing individual components of my windows are varied. They include:-
- extensive kiln-working of glass - slumping over forms and moulds to provide textural details, fusing to join glasses of different colours;
- sandblasting - providing etched surfaces and minute detail;
- traditional glass painting and staining, shading, detail and intense gold colouring.
The majority of commissions have been for domestic windows, autonomous panels and larger scale work in public spaces. An example of the latter is a series of three panels entitled "Diving Penguins" at the visitor's centre of the Phillip Island Penguin Parade, Victoria and the Tree of Life commission for the Somers School Camp. Both works are designed as an interpretive tool by teaching staff at each centre.
My work aims to be enjoyed both from a distance and up close, encouraging the viewer to draw closer and examine the minute details and textures of light and texture and marine life.
Commissions can be arranged through Seaview Gallery - please contact the gallery 03 5258 3645
