Michael Parker is never happier than when exploring new styles and mediums.
His new exhibition features works in encaustic wax. What is Encaustic Painting?
Encaustic painting is one of the oldest forms of painting dating back to the 5th Century B.C. It consists of refined beeswax, canuba wax and Damar resin melted and mixed with natural pigments. Each layer of wax is fused to the previous layer with a naked flame to form one mass. Painting in encaustic requires quick deliberate strokes as the wax begins to harden the moment it leaves its heat source.

Working in oils and with an impressionistic style, Di’s understanding of colour and form and how these are influenced by the effect of varying light, is truly impressive. Using subjects as diverse as cattleman of the high country, fisherman, seascapes and landscapes, Di evokes beautifully the moods of the Australian landscape. Nude and draped figures also feature in her work, painted in a dazzling array of light and colour, and composition.
In 2008 Di King was awarded “The Australian Art Excellence Gold Award” from the “The Australian Guild of Realist Artists” (A.G.R.A.), a national body.

BRETT JARRETT: “In the world of a natural history painter, a trip to the field is the most exciting and stimulating way to ignite many ideas for a wide array of paintings of different species. Such unique opportunities, as my recent trips to the geographic North Pole, and sailing around the Antarctic coastline makes me feel very alive and inspired. It enhances the importance of painting subjects correctly as I’ve experienced them, doing justice to the accurate portrayal of your subject, and capturing the correct use of light and tone in the painting is one of the most enjoyable aspects of being a natural history painter.”
FIONA BILBROUGH: “I am committed to working directly from life, with model or landscape. I was greatly influenced by the realistic, master painters of Britain and Spain when I spent 18 months studying in Europe as a recipient of the prestigious Alice Bale Scholarship.”
Fiona’s still life paintings, reflect the traditional approach of her teachers. Fiona’s work is beautifully and harmoniously balanced, her composition being of utmost importance and her vital starting point. Only proceeding once the problems of visual order, balance, and composition have been solved, Fiona stains the canvas with the background colour. She then begins working methodically over the whole canvas, building colour, tone and texture with each carefully placed brushstroke.
