Keith Smith

'As a watercolour artist, I have always been inspired by beautiful places. A boat trip along the Kimberley coast provided me with the challenge of capturing the unique colours and remarkable features of this ruggedly beautiful area in Western Australia.'

The Kimberley Coast, an artist's impressions
The Kimberley Coast is a remote and spectacular region of Australia, still visited by only a small number of people. There are few roads, no resorts, and access to most of the coast is by sea only.

A recent boat trip along this coastline, inspired and stimulated Point Lonsdale artist, Keith Smith, to record his visit with a series of watercolour paintings. His work, which will be seen in a special exhibition at Queenscliff's Seaview Gallery from March 8 - 16, 2008 (over the Labour Day Weekend), will enable viewers to share this experience.

Keith's watercolours are renowned for their strong use of colour and treatment of light, and his technique is ideally suited to the Kimberley landscape. The special challenge for these paintings was to capture the unique colours of this wild and scenic area, its drama and its stark beauty, its intense colours, strong sunlight, magnificent rock formations and waterfalls, stunning coastline and river gorges, pristine beaches and above all, its feeling of remoteness.

The guide on Keith's boat trip was Mike Cusack who, with his wife Susan, spent a year (1987) living in isolation in the harsh Kimberley environment. (They were chosen by Australian Geographic and Dick Smith to become Australia's first wilderness couple.) A trek to the site of the long-abandoned Kunmunya mission, where Mike and Susan lived, was a highlight of the Kimberley experience for Keith. A painting of the 'home' they built from bush materials features in the exhibition.

Keith is a winner of many prizes and awards. He has had ten successful major solo exhibitions. His paintings, through which he records his visits to beautiful locations, feature summer and winter landscapes of Australia's high country, spectacular coastline and 'red centre', as well as many overseas locations. Originally a graphic designer, Keith is self taught and remains deliberately uninfluenced by other artists.
